Utah Geographic Information Council Educator Mentoring Program
Need help with a understanding GIS or beginning a GIS project? This program has been designed to help K-12 educators link up with GIS professionals in a mentoring relationship.

Utah Maps
This is a statewide index of Utah maps available online.

Utah Atlas of Panoramic Aerial Images
The atlas contains more than 800 computer generated panoramas that portray every square foot of the state. Most of these panoramas were created from a virtual elevation of 40 kilometers (24.85 miles) above sea level with a virtual 35 mm camera equipped with a 22 mm lens.

Utah Geological Survey
Explorer GeoSights in Utah using Google Earth. The site has fantastic images and virtual journeys around Utah.

GIS Day
GIS Day 2009 was be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Seven Jordan schools attended. It was a lot of fun. Mark your calendars and get involved for next year. GIS Day 2010 is Nov 17, 2010.

Penn Pilot
This website houses and makes available stereo aerial photography of Pennsylvania for the 1930s-1970s time period. What you will see is a map of Pennsylvania, and when you zoom in, you will see 1990s-era aerial photography. Then you can select “Display Historical Photo” with the decade of your choice (not all of the photographs have been loaded yet), and have your students comparing how the landscape has changed. Imagine exploring Philadelphia before freeways, looking at the National Road as it was under construction, or examining the reclamation of mining areas with this site.

TopoBingo.
This game from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is used to familiarize students with topographic maps, the symbols used on them, and some basic topographic features. You may use your own topographic maps for the game or use the maps provided by the USGS aat this site. They provide 22 small maps from 11 different U.S. locations. An expansion and update to this from 2009 by Joseph Kerski, ESRI, Topo Match and Topo Bingo, is on: http://edcommunity.esri.com/arclessons/lesson.cfm?id=425.

Earth As ArtEarth As Art This gallery of images uses the visceral avenue of art to convey the thrilling perspective of the Earth that satellites provide to the viewer.

Asian Elephant Range Loss Studied With GIS
The Conservation and Research Center of the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park (Washington, D.C.) has one of the most extensive programs of conservation biology research in the world. Researchers at CRC have been studying the plight of the Asian elephant threatened by ivory poaching and habitat loss.

GPS Visualizer:
GPS Visualizer can read data files from many different sources, including but not limited to: GPX (a standard format used with many devices and programs, including Garmin's eTrex, GPSMAP, Oregon, Dakota, Colorado, & Nüvi series), Google Earth (.kml/.kmz), Geocaching.com (.loc), FAI/IGC glider logs, MS Excel, Google Spreadsheets, XML feeds, Garmin Forerunner (.xml/.hst/.tcx), Timex Trainer, OziExplorer, Cetus GPS, PathAway, cotoGPS, CompeGPS, TomTom (.pgl), IGN Rando (.rdn), Emtac Trine, Suunto X9/X9i (.sdf), Fugawi, NetStumbler, and of course tab-delimited or comma-separated text.
GPS Visualizer is based in Portland, Oregon, and has been on the Web since October 2002.

ArcGIS Explorer: Free maps and tasks are available to use in your ArcGIS applications. Scroll through the page to see the available basemaps, reference maps, specialty maps, elevation globes, demographic maps, tasks, and retiring maps (no longer being updated).

GIS Jobs: You'll be interested to know that the US Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration's Occupational Information Network (O*NET) now lists five new geospatial occupations: "Geospatial Information Scientists and Technologists", "Remote Sensing Scientists and Technologists", "Geographic Information Systems Technicians", "Precision Agriculture Technicians", and "Geodetic Surveyors".

You can find descriptions of most of these new occupations by doing an "Occupation Quick Search" on "geospatial" at the O*NET site http://online.onetcenter.org/ (Geodetic Surveyors seems not to include the keyword "geospatial.")

World Sunlight Map Watch the sun rise and set all over the world on this real-time, computer-generated illustration of the earth's patterns of sunlight and darkness. The clouds are updated every 3 hours with current weather satellite imagery.

World Daylight Map DaylightMap shows the pattern of night and day on a Google map, for any area of the Earth, for any date and time. It also allows you to select up to ten locations on the map; in addition to seeing at a glance whether it's daytime there, you can show their local time, sunrise and and sunset times, and length of day.
